Two passing sets, a catch tally and one adjustment.

Learn a gentle backhand pass and a two-handed catch, practise with a partner, and understand the basic rules before joining a beginner ultimate session.

What you need to know

  1. A partner and a disc

Borrow a smooth, intact disc made for throwing and catching, and agree to keep the first passes gentle.

  2. Clear grass and light wind

Use a permitted, level area with room for misses, away from roads, windows, pets and other users.

  3. Grip and weather preparation

Wear shoes that hold on the grass and clothes suited to the weather; bring water if you need it.

Try ultimate’s basic throw and catch with one partner. In 20–30 minutes, make two sets of ten passes. This is practice without defenders or scoring.

Pass and catch from a short distance

Walk and move your arms comfortably before starting. Stand still, about 3–5 metres apart. Check that your partner is watching and ready; wait if someone or a pet enters the throwing space.

For a backhand, put your thumb on top of the disc and curl your fingers around its rim. Turn your throwing shoulder toward your partner. Keep the disc roughly level, draw it across your body, then swing forward and snap your wrist toward them. Aim for a gentle pass around waist to chest height. USA Ultimate’s guide illustrates the grip and release.

To catch, watch the disc into your hands. Reach in front with one open palm above it and the other below, then bring your palms together around its middle. Let an errant disc fall rather than diving or chasing it near an obstacle. Walk to retrieve it and return to your spots before another throw.

Make two sets of ten

Trade ten passes total, alternating who throws. Count every attempt once, caught or missed, and record the number caught. If misses dominate, move closer and throw more softly. If the disc rises or curves away, check that it stays level at release. Change one thing, then make ten more passes and record that catch total. Stop if a movement hurts.

In a game, teammates pass toward the attacking end zone and score with a catch there. Players cannot run with the disc. An incomplete, intercepted or out-of-bounds pass gives possession to the other team. Ultimate is non-contact; players resolve calls honestly under Spirit of the Game. Ask a local group about beginner sessions, equipment and fees. The UK Ultimate finder covers UK clubs and informal games; elsewhere, look for a local or national association. An experienced group can introduce moving catches, defenders and full rules.
